Breathing is a basic bodily function, which allows air to go in and out of your lungs and keeps your body oxygenated. However, it is incredibly easy to breathe the wrong way when you’re performing intense physical activities. Needless to say, this could have an impact on your endurance and overall performance, which is why, if you need a few pointers on how to breathe correctly when you work out, you should follow the ones mentioned below.

Remember to Breathe

This first one may seem a little bit obvious, but many people forget to do it: breathe! When you’re working out, you may stop breathing due to all of the effort you’re putting in. However, this could be very detrimental, so make it a point to remind yourself to take deep breaths in.

Expand Your Tummy

Just breathing won’t cut it! You need to breathe the right way in order to allow air through your body. Often times you may breathe shallow breaths that expand your chest. Still, you should focus on taking deep breaths in that make your tummy expand and contract to allow more air in.

Breathe Accordingly

As you may know, there are different kinds of exercise, and each has different types of movements and demands. Make sure that your breathe accordingly by following these tips:
  • Cardio: when doing cardio, you must find a rhythm in your movements and tie your breath in with them. For example, when jogging, breathe in for four steps, and out for four steps.
  • Sports: certain sports, such as football and swimming, require you to breathe a certain way to perform your best. In football, for instance, if you want to avoid having the wind knocked out of you when you get tackled, breathe out entirely before the impact.
  • Weights: you need to put in a lot of effort when doing weights, so use your breathing to help you get through it. Breathe in while doing the easiest part of the movement (bringing the weights down), and exhale when doing the hardest part (lifting the weights up).
  • Stretch: stretching is extremely important so you can recover after working out. Help your body slow down by inhaling deeply and breathing out as you’re reaching and stretching. This will also allow you to get further out and improve your flexibility.
