The equipment an athlete uses is often very important to his or her sport. With some exceptions, shoes are an exceedingly important piece of that equipment in athletic activity. If you’re an athlete in training then you likely know the truth in this. Athletic Republic in Pittsburgh would like to help encourage our athletes today by providing some key information about finding the importance of finding the right shoes for your athletic activities. 

  • If you play a particular sport, remember that sports specific shoes are made with a purpose, and that purpose is to keep your feet safe and effective in what you’re playing. That being said, get sport specific shoes as they are required. 
  • When looking for said sport specific shoes, take the time to go to a specialty store. Here you’ll find employees who are more knowledgeable about what you’re looking for, perhaps even other athletes who will know from experience how the shoes will work out. 
  • The best time to go and try out a new pair of shoes is at the end of the day, and especially after a work out. Remember that your feet are biggest at the end of the day and therefore this provides the perfect time to try on shoes. If the shoes are not tight on you then, then they’ll feel good for the rest of the day as well. 
  • Likewise, if the shoes are laced differently than you would have chosen, unlace the shoes and rework them to your liking. The point of this would be to have the shoes as you would wear them, which will help you determine if they’re the ones for you or not. 
  • Be sure to wear the style of socks you’ll use for the sport. You don’t want to, for example, be wearing very thin dress socks when trying on shoes for running, as those are not likely to be what you’ll go running in. 
  • Remember that if the shoes do not fit you right away, they’re not the shoes for you. As you’ll likely be using them right away, and using them in a rigorous activity, you want them to fit well.
  •      - If your toes are pinched or you cannot move them, the shoes are too small
  •      - On the other hand, if your heel is slipping out of the back of the shoe or your toes are sliding to the front, the shoes are too large
  • Lastly, keep in mind to remember the weather. If you’re training during winter, for example, you’re going to want to keep your feet warm and safe while you’re out there.
