Crunches are one of those basic moves that everybody does if they want to strengthen their core and get abs. However, many may not know the right way to do them. As an athlete, you’re aware that if you want to get the desired results and avoid injuries, you need to do your workouts with proper form. For this reason, this post will go over a few tips that you can follow to get the most out of your crunches.

How to Do Crunches the Right Way

Begin with the Right Form

Start the right way: lay flat on the floor (do it on a mat or cushioned floor so you don’t hurt your back). Then, bend your knees and plant your feet at about hip-width apart. Cross your arms over your chest and keep your head straight staring at the ceiling.

Mind Your Breathing

As mentioned in a previous post, you should breathe correctly if you want your performance to be at a 100%. Keep in mind that you should inhale deeply on your way down from the crunch, and to exhale on your way up to get a bit further with your movement.

Crunch Your Body Up

Use your abdominal muscles (not your neck) to lift the upper part of your body from the floor until you get your shoulders off the ground. Remember to keep looking at the ceiling, and to never stick your chin to your neck (extend your neck), as this could result in an injury.

Return to the Initial Position

Try to make your movements as slow and controlled as possible to really get your stomach working. Even as you head back down, do it at a slow pace to exercise your muscles. Don’t release the contraction until you’re back on the floor.

Extra Tips

If you want your crunches to work the way you want them to, make sure to pull your belly-button in, instead of pushing it out. Likewise, you can keep your head up by staring at a spot in the ceiling and placing your tongue at the roof of your mouth.
