How Will the Pirates Finish up Their 2015 Season?

It's September, which means that kids are back in school, the leaves are changing colors, and our very own Pittsburgh Pirates are entering the final stages of the MLB season. Do the Pirates have a chance to make it to the Fall Classic? Even if they don't, will their season have been a success? Naturally only time will tell, but let's take a look at where they stand.

Pittsburgh Pirates and the AL Wild Card Race

As of this writing, the Pirates find themselves in pretty good shape in the NL Central. Although the Cardinals are threatening to run away with the division, the Pirates are still in prime position to lock up a playoff spot. They lead the NL Wild Card race by a comfortable margin, and we'll see if they are able to hold off the Cubs, Giants, and Nationals down the stretch.

Why the Pirates Will Make the Playoffs

The Pirates have a strong pitching rotation led by Gerrit Cole, who was named the April National League Pitcher of the Month. Add quality starters Francisco Liriano, Jeff Locke, and Charlie Morton to the mix, and the rotation is well rounded. The return of AJ Burnett this month could also provide a boost. So, if the old axiom holds true, and "good pitching beats good hitting," the Pirates are in great shape. That's not to say there isn't talent on offense. Andrew McCutchen is having another stellar year at the plate, and was selected to his 5th straight All-Star Game in July. The rest of the lineup produces runs by committee, but regardless of how they do it, they've been winning games--and should continue to do so well into October.
