Is there anything more exhilarating than a run outdoors or a yoga session in the park after a particularly cold season? As we begin to take advantage of the sun, it's important to stay safe. Before you bring out the summer sports training outfits from your closet, it's important to remember that as much as it is great to exercise outdoors, it's important to protect yourself from the negatives effects of the sun.

How to Stay Safe While You Exercise Outdoors

To get you on the right (running) track towards sun awareness and staying safe as you exercise outdoors, Athletic Republic Pittsburgh has some tips to share.

Hat

Seems like the obvious one, but this tip comes in the form of choosing the correct hat. As fashionable as they may be, visors aren't the best at protecting your head from the sun. Keep your head covered and when it comes to brims, the bigger - the better. If you find that you sweat a decent amount, look for a hat that can provide ventilation and draw sweat away from your head and hair.

Torso

This is a tough choice; full coverage and a sweaty run or a free and breezy run with some sun exposure. The obvious choice is full coverage, but it isn't always an option. When you can't, look for t-shirts with ventilation strips and that are made from a material that can draw the sweat away from your skin.

Bottoms

Running in pants isn't fun. But neither is sun damaged skin. If you aren't running for hours, full coverage running pants are the way to go. If you are running long distance, do you best to work with long shorts. Whichever length you choose, ventilation is key. If you're looking for the best of both world, consider running pants that can be zipped off, making them shorter. If you do take up this idea, be sure that you have full movement whether they're zipped up or not. Sun Protection Doesn't Stop With Your Clothes

With your clothes taken care of, it's time for general sun awareness tips!
  • Any time that you're outdoors and exercising in the sun, wear a high SPF rated sunscreen on any parts of your body that are exposed to the sun.
  • When using your sunscreen, don't forget to rub it behind your ears. While this tip might sound basic, it's a commonly forgotten area and causes a nasty burn.
  • More sun means more heat. And more heat means more perspiration. It's extra important that you stay vigilant of your hydration level while you're exercising outdoors.
  • If possible, look for places where you can exercise under some shade. A large tree in your local park, as an example, could provide the perfect space for a two or three person yoga session in the shade.
  • Carry a towel with you when you can. When the extra perspiration sits on your skin it can become cold when a breeze passes, which isn't good for your body.
  • Sometimes it's okay to let the sun beat you! If it's too hot out, don't go out. Wait a few hours until the sun starts to set and it gets to a temperature that is a little more manageable. Remember, you aren't just walking around in the temperature, you're physically exerting yourself in it.
  • Utilize any smart features that your mobile device or wearable tech has that can help you monitor your fitness levels as you exercise. Pay attention to them as they can give you a solid heads up when it comes to over-exerting yourself in the heat.
